Week 7 - Diversity in everything we do

The discussion this week is one that I have not really done a lot of work with. Coming from an urban area, there are not many times that I have to look at material to make sure it is culturally diverse. The culture at my school is greatly one sided and so there is a lot of majority rules that goes on.

I do however see the importance of obtaining sites with multicultural emphasis to insure that all students are getting the maximum benefit from the material. I appreciated the fact that Gorski gave examples of the criterion he uses to gauge websites and other material. I can begin to use those criteria in order to establish materials and websites that are culturally diverse. This is my first semester teaching children and there is a lot I have to learn about finding appropriate material. The article really helped to give me a foundation that I can build upon. In order to become the most effective teacher possible I have to understand how diverse material will help my students to grow and thrive.

I have never given complete thought to teaching diversity using the Internet. The web sites I have site licenses to have various cultural activities built into them, I guess they were thinking about diversity when they developed them, come to think of it a lot of teacher authored
web sites have diversity activities already built into them, I am thinking that they would meet the requirement for diversity.

Hey Nicky,

I'm new to the teaching profession too, but I was fortunate to attend a high school twenty years ago that had extensive diversity (over 30+ Nations represented). So I guess this topic has been second nature for a long time.

I also use a lot of resources that are either Government sponsored or teacher-centered for vetting purposes. I have found that they are generally reliable and will get straight to point of what they are about.

Here's a few sites to consider:

Hi Nicky, Isn't it funny how the "majority rules" thing works out? An ethnic minority in some areas or school districts is a majority elsewhere as is my environment in Pontiac. There are so many different cultures represented in our country we all need multicutural awareness and education for our students regardless of the districts in which we work. Thanks, too, to Brad for the websites!

Thanks for the comments and Brad, thanks for the websites. I will make sure to check those out. I understand how important diversity is and I like the fact that we are talking about it and how to incorporate it.
