Week 11 Post

Virtual schooling is not a new word or concept for me. Working in a K-12 school district has afforded me the opportunity to understand and gain knowledge of virtual schooling. I always felt that this was a great avenue for my school district to research. Unfortunately to date the district has still not looked into the possibilities.

With all that being said I understand the legislation in Michigan and the requirements that are now in place for online schooling. I also know that many school districts are not ready for such a big undertaking. Some of the myths that I read in the article surprised me. I never really imagined that people had so many misconceptions of the process. The one myth that I was especially surprised to see was number ten. Which states online courses are a burden to school systems and teachers. They are like adding on more responsibility. I feel that online courses would serve as a way of freedom for teachers. Just like the article states, it gives teachers the ability to design and deliver a course that will fit the students' learning patterns and interests.

Hey Ms. Brown (Nicole!),

I think No.10 is odd too. But when I initially read it, I remembered that all change becomes hard to accept for some, especially teachers. Keeping up in the profession can be very difficult, and now virtual schooling comes along. At any rate, I would like to try and teach such a course and really decide for myself if I like teaching in the virtual school.

I agree, many school districts are not ready for such a big undertaking. However, if they neglect this opportunity, students will take advantage of districts that will.

Wow! Great comments by all of you!

Nicole it's good to know that there are people like you who are ready to take on this form of education. I am not sure how much freedom is involved for teachers, but I do know that some things we must experience before casting it down. Before learning about virtual schools and participating in on-line courses myself, I was biased. However, I am more open to virtual learning than I was previously. As a matter of fact, with the way technology is being thrust upon us I don't feel like I have a choice. As Shawn stated kids will go where the advantages are if many of aren't on board.
